# API Tokens

## Creating an API token

API tokens are used for secure API communication.

1. Log in to Britive with administrator privileges.
2. Click **System admin** -> **Security** -> **API Tokens**.
3. Click on the **Create Token** button.
4. Enter the name and validity of the API token. Click **Save**. The validity counter is refreshed with every use of a token.
5. Copy and save the token.

You can update the name and validity of any token by clicking the Manage icon from the Actions column.
